Things to practice at home

2/20 Dear Parents, PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD READ THE LITTLE GUIDED READING BOOKS THAT ARE BEING SENT HOME. It would be ideal if they read one of them every single evening/night. Thank you!

12/5 Dear Parents, Below are some helpful ideas to practice finding the same beginning sound as another word/picture:

1. Find a variety of objects from around the house beginning with the letters that we've learned about (letters are below in HOT PINK). Show your child 4 objects and ask which object has the same beginning sound as another object/word. EXAMPLE: "Here is a sandal, fruit, lemon, candle. Which one of these has the same beginning sound as laugh?"

2. The same as above, but use picture cards or pictures from magazines. The children would love to make their own picture cards from magazines or color clipart images that you print from the computer!

Below are some ideas for finding the middle sound in a word:

1. Using chalk and a your driveway/shaving cream and your table/whiteboard and dry erase markers/pencil and paper, write a word from one of our previous blending sheets, but don't write the middle letter. EXAMPLE: Write: c_t Say, this word needs to say cot, but the middle sound is missing, can you fill in the missing letter. If your child is having a difficult time figuring out which sound, have them chop with their hand the word in parts c/o/t.

2. Say a word from our blending sheet aloud and have your child tell you the middle sound and what letter makes that sound.

11/28 Dear Parents, Some of the children haven't mastered the letter i & t (our last two letters). We will continue to work on these in class, but this a great thing to practice at home as well! Here is how to help:

1. Say a word from their blending sheet and have them try to sound it out to write it. Remind your child to say all of the sounds slowly. You can have your child do this using shaving cream on the table to write, chalk outside (it's been beautiful out!), paper/pencil, using letter magnets, etc.

2. Have your child make flashcards for the letters that we've learned (found below). See how fast they can do the sounds that those letters make.

3. Make two sets of flashcards using some of the words from the blending sheet. Play the game Memory with them. Your child has to read the word to keep the matches!

4. Using the flashcards from #3, play Go Fish!

Blending Sheet:

Please have your child read the words from their blending sheet! This can be found on the back side of their blue folder. Please do this daily. You will get a new blending sheet each new unit.

We have been working hard on rhyming words, however this skill is one of the more challenging ones to master. If you notice that your child is coming home with corrections on rhyming assignments, please work with them on this skill.

We have been blending nonsense words made with the short sounds of the letters that we've learned: c, o, g, a, d, s, l, i, t, f

You can help your child at home by writing, reading, and listening to the sounds being blended to make the nonsense words using those letters: Example: gos, gog, etc.

Real Words using those letters: dad, add, dog, gag, da da, odd, sad, gas, sag, sod, etc.
